What Is Archetype Blue?

Archetype Blue is a pixel-art dark fantasy deckbuilding RPG developed by indie studio Codename Bom. The core mechanic is unique: the companions you grow close to become your deck. Instead of collecting cards, you build bonds with over 50 companions, and those relationships form your battle deck.

The game was revealed via a gameplay trailer in mid-2026 and quickly gained attention for its innovative "bonds become cards" system and gorgeous pixel-art aesthetic. A free demo is available on Steam.

How to Play Archetype Blue

The bond system: Your deck is built from relationships. Each companion you meet has a unique personality, backstory, and combat style. As you spend time with them, complete their quests, and make dialogue choices that align with their values, your bond deepens. Stronger bonds unlock more powerful card versions of that companion.

Combat: Battles are turn-based card encounters. Your hand consists of companion cards, each with abilities tied to your bond level. Play cards strategically — some companions excel at offense, others at defense, support, or utility. Building a balanced "party" (deck) is essential.

Exploration: The world is a pixel-art dark fantasy realm with interconnected areas. Explore to find new companions, resources, and story encounters. The world reacts to your choices and which companions you've bonded with.

Camp management: Between adventures, you can rest at camp, chat with companions, craft items, and prepare for the next expedition. Camp conversations are where bonds deepen most.

Tips and Tricks

Focus on a core team first. With 50+ companions available, try to build a core team of 5-6 companions early. Leveling their bonds evenly gives you more flexibility than spreading thin across everyone.

Balance your deck roles. A good deck needs damage dealers, a tank or two, and support characters. Don't go all offense — you'll struggle against bosses that target specific roles.

Pay attention to companion personalities. Each companion has values and preferences. A warrior who values bravery will bond faster if you make bold dialogue choices. A scholar who values wisdom appreciates thoughtful responses. Matching your choices to their personality speeds up bond growth significantly.

Complete companion quests. Every companion has a personal questline. These are the fastest way to deepen bonds and unlock their most powerful card forms. Prioritize quests for your core team.

Experiment with synergies. Certain companions have special synergies when played together. A fire mage and a wind mage might combine for a devastating firestorm. Discover these combos by trying different team compositions.

Don't neglect camp. Camp is where the deepest conversations happen. Always rest before major story encounters, and use camp time to talk with companions whose bonds you want to grow.
