What Is Dear Magical Girls?

Dear Magical Girls is a story-driven defense game where you reshape a magical barrier to hold back waves of beasts. Developed by GIGABlock Studio and published by Jungle Game Lab, it launches July 31, 2026 on Steam. And it's free.

You play as Arin, a magical girl in her fourth year on the job. Her task: protect the mana stones that keep the city's magical infrastructure running. Between sleepless shifts and emergency dispatches, she enters the Otherworld, raises her barrier, and fights off the beasts lurking within.

The twist is the barrier itself. You don't place towers. You reshape the battlefield. Move vertices, expand or shrink your territory, and direct your attacks by controlling the shape of your magic.

Story

Arin is tired. Four years as a magical girl, and the cracks are showing. The city runs on mana stones, and those stones need protection from the beasts that crawl out of the Otherworld. She works shifts, gets emergency calls at 3 AM, and smiles through it all because that's what magical girls do.

But the story digs deeper. Through dialogue with Charlotte (a veteran magical girl), Lily (a girl who idolizes magical girls), and other city residents, you see the cost of the job. The narrative plays out between missions — you return to the city, talk to people, and watch Arin's world unfold.

The tone sits somewhere between Madoka Magica and a workplace dramedy. The magic is real, the monsters are terrifying, and the burnout is very, very human.

Core Mechanics

The Barrier System

Your primary tool is a polygonal barrier you control in real time. The barrier is defined by vertices — corner points that you can move, add, or remove.

  • Expand the barrier — Captures more territory, secures resources, and gives you room to maneuver
  • Shrink the barrier — Concentrates your firepower in a smaller area. Tighter shape = denser attacks
  • Keep buffs inside — Beneficial effects apply to areas within the barrier
  • Push debuffs out — Harmful effects from enemies stay outside the barrier

The shape matters. A wide triangle covers ground but spreads your attacks thin. A compact hexagon focuses damage but leaves gaps. You adjust the shape as the battlefield changes.

Mana Cannons

Mana cannons travel along the edges of your barrier. They fire automatically at enemies that cross the boundary. The longer the edge, the more cannons you can deploy along it.

The geometry is key:

  • More vertices = more edges = more cannons
  • Longer edges = more cannons on that side
  • Shorter edges = concentrated fire on a narrow angle
  • You can add new vertices by spending mana gained from expanding territory

Modules and Enchants

As the story progresses, you unlock modules and enchants:

TypeWhat It DoesExamples
Attack ModuleChanges how your cannons fireSpread shot, piercing beam, homing missiles
Defense ModuleAdds protective effectsBarrier heal, damage reflect, slow aura
Utility ModuleProvides strategic optionsExtra mana generation, temporary barrier extension
EnchantEnhances module traits+range, +damage, +fire rate, reduced cooldown

Modules go into slots. Enchants modify individual modules. Building the right combination for each wave is the core strategic loop.

Time Stop

When things get dangerous, you can stop time. This pauses the action and lets you reposition vertices, plan your next move, and prepare for the incoming wave. The time stop has a cooldown — use it wisely.

Gameplay Loop

Each mission follows this structure:

  1. Story setup — Brief dialogue or scene setting up the mission context
  2. Barrier setup — Position your initial vertices, choose your modules
  3. Wave combat — Monsters attack in waves. Reshape your barrier as the situation evolves
  4. Resource management — Collect mana from expanded territory, spend it on new vertices or module upgrades
  5. Wave completion — Survive all waves, earn rewards
  6. City intermission — Return to the city, talk to characters, advance the story

The difficulty is adjustable. You can make the game harder for greater rewards, or easier for a relaxed story experience.

Beginner's Guide

1. Start with a simple shape

A triangle (3 vertices) is the easiest to manage. You only need to watch three points. As you get comfortable, add a fourth to make a quadrilateral, giving you more cannon edges.

2. Expand early, consolidate later

At the start of a wave, expand your barrier wide to capture territory and generate mana. As enemies approach, shrink it down to focus firepower on their entry paths.

3. Keep buffs inside, debuffs outside

Pay attention to the colored zones that appear on the battlefield. Green zones are buffs — keep them inside your barrier. Red zones are debuffs — push them out by reshaping around them.

4. Match modules to the enemy type

Early enemies are straightforward — basic melee beasts. Later waves introduce fliers (need fast-tracking weapons), shielded enemies (need piercing attacks), and swarmers (need area damage). Check the wave preview and adjust your modules accordingly.

5. Don't hoard mana

Mana not spent is mana wasted. New vertices pay for themselves if they give you better coverage. Module upgrades are often more impactful than saving for a "better" module later.

6. Use time stop proactively

Don't wait until you're overwhelmed. Time stop is for planning, not panic. Use it when you see a new enemy type approaching, when a wave transitions, or when you need to completely reshape your barrier.

Characters

Arin — The protagonist. A magical girl in her fourth year. Competent but exhausted. She smiles because it's expected, not because she feels like it.

Charlotte — A veteran magical girl who's been doing this for over a decade. She's seen it all and carries the weight of experience. Mentor figure, but with her own scars.

Lily — A young girl who admires magical girls. She represents the innocent view of what Arin does — before the burnout sets in. Her perspective contrasts sharply with Arin's reality.

The requirements are modest — a GTX 750 Ti from a decade ago meets the minimum. The game runs on standard PC hardware without issues. No Linux or Mac support at launch.

Difficulty and Accessibility

Dear Magical Girls includes several accessibility options:

  • Adjustable difficulty — Change enemy health, damage, and wave frequency
  • Camera comfort — Options for screen shake and camera movement
  • Custom volume controls — Separate sliders for music, SFX, and voice
  • Playable without timed input — Time stop has no cooldown in easy mode
  • Save anytime — You can save and quit during missions

These features make the game approachable for players who want the story without the stress, while still offering challenge for strategy enthusiasts.

Developer Background

GIGABlock Studio is a small indie team based in South Korea. Dear Magical Girls appears to be their debut Steam release. The developer has been active on social media (X/Twitter: @gigablockstudio) and has shown steady progress on the game throughout 2026.

The game's blend of magical girl aesthetics with tower defense strategy and a story about burnout has drawn comparisons to Madoka Magica meets Plants vs. Zombies — but the barrier-reshaping mechanic gives it its own identity.

Steam Achievements

As a free-to-play game with a story focus, achievements likely track:

  • Story achievements — Complete each chapter of the story
  • Combat achievements — Survive certain waves without taking damage, reach high scores
  • Collection achievements — Unlock all modules and enchants
  • Challenge achievements — Complete missions on higher difficulty settings

The full list will be available at launch on July 31.
