Overview

ALTEREDBLOOD+ is a movement FPS built on one idea: the blood your enemies spill belongs to you. Shoot someone and their blood paints the wall behind them. Stand in that blood, or bathe in the gibs, and your weapons Awaken into stronger versions with new effects. TrueWorld Studios took the game through a public demo and playtest phase, then launched Early Access on November 4, 2026 at $9.99 with a launch discount. The pitch mixes Quake-era movement tech with a cosmic horror story about MOTHER, a self-replicating megastructure that has eaten 99.99999997% of the observable universe, and the furry protagonist she built to finish the job.

Who this is for: Ultrakill and Quake refugees who want a movement sandbox, and anyone who finds a weapon that behaves differently when you are standing in gore genuinely funny. Rock Paper Shotgun described it as a movement shooter at the end of the universe where survival means soaking in enemy blood, which is the most accurate one-line summary available.

Who should wait: players who need a finished campaign. Early Access 0.1 is a foundation: three episodes, one boss, and a roadmap promising larger content drops later.

Getting Started

The first mission

The game opens with a hub world that handles mission select and difficulty settings, so pick the lowest difficulty if the movement tech is new to you. The six launch missions descend into MOTHER's depths and teach the core loop in order: enemies explode into gibs, gibs and blood pools stay on the ground, and your weapon states change depending on what you are standing in.

Beginner mistakes

  • Playing scared. Retreating to clean areas puts you out of the blood you need to heal and Awaken. The game wants you in the mess.
  • Ignoring the settings. Modernized control presets exist specifically for players who never learned Source-engine movement, and the default binds assume you did.
  • Treating it like a cover shooter. Standing still gets you killed; the Steam description says it outright: the key is to never stop moving.
  • Skipping the demo habits. The speedrun community already mapped two core techniques (Super dashes and Slam Tech) into guides on Speedrun.com, and both work in Early Access.

Core Mechanics Explained

Splatter, Soak, Awaken

Everything runs through one cycle. Your attacks blast blood onto surfaces and enemies detonate into gibs that spread more of it. Standing in blood or bathing in gibs Awakens your weapons. An Awakened weapon gains powerful effects and unique interactions with the blood on the ground, which turns arena geography into a resource. The floor you just painted is your ammo economy, your health bar and your power-up state all at once.

The four launch weapons and the knife

Early Access 0.1 ships four weapons plus one knife, each with unique Altered mechanics. The Steam page keeps detailed weapon breakdowns vague on purpose, so experimentation is the content. What the official roadmap promises instead is structure: six foes with unique Altered variants, one chapter boss, and a Gravekeeper wave survival mode across three arenas where the blood cycle gets tested under pressure.

Movement tech

TrueWorld built the game on classic FPS movement: b-hopping, air-strafing, surfing, trimping and rocket jumping all work. If you know Quake or Team Fortress 2 movement, your skills transfer directly. If you do not, turn on the modernized controls in settings and learn one technique at a time. Air-strafing first, because it makes every other technique faster.

Healing without health packs

There is no medkit economy to manage. Soaking in blood replenishes you, which means aggressive play is the defensive play. The practical rule: after every kill, move through the gib pile before re-engaging. Chaining kills along a painted path keeps you topped up without ever standing still.

Early Access Content and Roadmap

The 0.1 feature list, straight from the Steam page:

  • 3 story episodes, 6 missions total, descending into MOTHER's depths
  • Hub world with mission select and difficulty settings
  • Gravekeeper wave survival mode with 3 arenas
  • 4 weapons and 1 knife with unique Altered mechanics
  • 6 foes with unique Altered variants
  • 1 chapter boss
  • Customizable blood colors and player colors
  • Online global and friends leaderboards

After launch, the studio plans large content updates (episodes or full chapters), new Gravekeeper arenas, localization updates, and rework-and-bugfix passes. Buy now only if the current six missions interest you; otherwise wishlist it and watch the roadmap image on the Steam page, which the studio keeps updated.

Step-by-Step Strategy

1. Learn one weapon in the hub arenas

Gravekeeper wave survival is the training ground. Pick one weapon, run three waves, and note what changes when you Awaken it. The wave mode's three arenas each have different geometry, which teaches you where blood pools collect.

2. Build a movement habit before raising difficulty

One session of air-strafing practice beats ten sessions of dying. Set a low difficulty, force yourself to never touch the stop key, and let accuracy suffer. Accuracy recovers with muscle memory; hesitation does not.

3. Fight near walls, not in open ground

Blood sticks to surfaces. Enemies in open arenas give you gibs but no painted walls, so the Awaken window is shorter. Herd fights toward walls when you can, and use explosive attacks to splatter the area behind a cluster.

4. Save the boss for Awakened weapons

The chapter boss is the skill check of 0.1. Go in with every weapon Altered and a plan for re-Awakening mid-fight, because the fight drains your painted floor fast. The leaderboard crowd runs it with Slam Tech for movement cancels; the Speedrun.com guide covers the inputs.

5. Use leaderboards as a difficulty setting

Global and friends leaderboards rank wave survival and mission performance. When a mission feels stale, chase a friend's score instead of waiting for new content. The leaderboard economy is the replayability of Early Access.

Advanced Tips

  • Blood color customization is cosmetic, but dark blood on dark levels genuinely hurts readability. Pick a bright red or cyan.
  • Trimping (slopes boosting your speed) turns arena ramps into shortcuts between blood pools. Surf the U-bends in Gravekeeper arenas to stay Awakened without fighting.
  • Rocket jumping into a gib shower is a heal and a reposition in one input. Risky, fast, correct.
  • Six foes have Altered variants, and the variants hit harder but bleed more. A room full of Altered enemies is a resource explosion; do not retreat from it.
  • Watch Keith Ballard's creator playthrough (linked from the official site) for weapon interactions the tooltips do not mention.

FAQ

Is ALTEREDBLOOD+ on consoles? No. Early Access is Windows only, and Linux and macOS are not officially supported per the Steam system requirements.

How much content is in Early Access? Three story episodes with six missions, one boss, three Gravekeeper wave arenas, four weapons plus a knife, six enemy types with Altered variants, and online leaderboards.

Do I need Source engine movement skills? No. Modernized control presets exist in the settings, and the game is playable without advanced tech. You will be slower, not locked out.

Is the demo still available? Yes. The free demo (separate Steam app) remains up, and the official site runs a browser-play page for the demo build.

What is the story about? In year 3242 CE humanity launched MOTHER, a self-replicating megastructure. By an absurd future date it has consumed nearly the entire observable universe, the remnants of humanity live off her blood, and she built you, a half-fox weapon, to destroy them. The game plays the lore completely straight and completely loud.

Does it have achievements? The Steam page lists leaderboards rather than an achievement count for 0.1; achievements are expected with the localization and content updates on the roadmap.
