Overview
SURA: Shattered Star is a free-to-play space-themed sword-fighting action platformer from HanRyang Studio, published by Jungle Game Lab. It launches July 31, 2026 on Steam. You play as Sura, a retired mercenary turned warrior, grieving the loss of his family. You cut through hand-drawn sci-fi environments, fighting corrupted machines and alien creatures to uncover what shattered your world — literally.
The core gameplay is fast-paced sword combat with a focus on timing and positioning. No grinding, no loot boxes, no stamina bars. You have a sword, you have a dash, and you have enemies that need killing. The difficulty curve is steady — early enemies telegraph attacks with long wind-ups, later ones chain combos and use projectiles.
It's free. No microtransactions. The entire game is one complete experience with a beginning, middle, and end.

Target Audience
SURA is for people who want a tight, focused action platformer without the bloat. No skill trees, no inventory management, no crafting. You walk into a room, you fight enemies, you move forward. It's closer to old-school action games — think Katana Zero's pacing but with more platforming and less dialogue.
Who might not enjoy it: players who need progression systems to stay motivated, those who dislike 2D sword combat, and anyone expecting a long campaign. This is a curated experience, not a 100-hour epic.
Getting Started
1. Learn the Three Moves
Sura has three actions: slash, dash, and jump. Slash has a short combo (three hits) and a heavy attack (hold the button). Dash has invincibility frames — use it to pass through enemy attacks, not just to move faster. Jump cancels out of a dash for air control.
2. Watch the Glow
Every enemy has a pre-attack glow. Red means a fast attack you should parry or dodge. Yellow means a heavy attack you can interrupt with your own hit. Blue means a ranged attack you need to close distance on. Learn the colors before you learn the patterns.
3. Save Often
The game lets you save anytime. Use this. Save before every new room, every boss, every platforming section. Dying sends you back to your last save. A 30-second habit saves 10 minutes of backtracking.
4. Break Everything
Crates, terminals, glowing panels — all of them drop health or energy shards. Energy powers your dash special moves. If you run out of energy mid-fight, you can't dodge. Stock up.
5. Read the Terminals
Scattered through each level are data terminals with story logs. They're optional, but they explain why the world is shattered, what happened to Sura's family, and who's behind the corruption. The game doesn't hold your hand on story — the terminals are your exposition.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Button-mashing attack | Enemies have hitstun thresholds. Mashing lets them recover and hit you back. | Time your swings. Hit, pause, hit again. |
| Forgetting to dash | The dash has invincibility frames. Standing still is the fastest way to die. | Dash through every attack. Always. |
| Ignoring crates | Shards from crates are your only resource. Skipping them leaves you underpowered. | Break every crate you see. |
| Saving only at checkpoints | The game lets you save anywhere. Only using checkpoints wastes time. | Quick-save before every challenge. |
| Tanking boss hits | Bosses deal 3-4 hearts of damage per hit. You have 10 hearts. Three mistakes and you're dead. | Learn boss patterns. One hit = back off and heal. |
| Not using heavy attack | Heavy attack breaks enemy guards and staggers big enemies. Light attacks bounce off shields. | Lead with heavy, follow up with light. |
Core Mechanics Deep Dive
Sword Combat System
Sura's sword has three states:
- Light Slash — Quick horizontal swing. Chain 3 for a combo. Lowest damage but fastest recovery.
- Heavy Slash — Overhead vertical chop. Hold the attack button. Slower but breaks guards and deals double damage.
- Dash Slash — Attack while dashing. Covers distance and hits everything in the dash path. Costs 1 energy.
Each enemy type has a weakness to one of these. Humanoid enemies with shields need Heavy Slash. Fast flying enemies need Light Slash combos. Groups need Dash Slash to hit multiple targets at once.
Energy System
Energy refills by breaking crates and defeating enemies. You start with 3 energy bars. Each bar powers one dash or one special move. Energy does not auto-regenerate — you must collect shards. This means prolonged fights drain your mobility. Smart players break crates during combat, not before.
Enemy Types
| Enemy | Behavior | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Drone | Flies at you, explodes on contact | Dash through and slash from behind |
| Soldier | Walks toward you, sword attack | Parry the first swing, heavy attack |
| Heavy | Slow but armored. Charges after 2 seconds | Dash sideways, heavy attack from the rear |
| Turret | Fixed position, shoots projectiles | Dash toward it between shots, slash twice |
| Corrupted | Fast lunging attacks, deals 3 hearts | Keep distance, bait the lunge, punish |
Boss Structure
Each of the 5 levels ends with a boss. Bosses have 2-3 phases, signaled by a visual change (glow color shift, new attack). Between phases, the boss is staggered for 3 seconds — your window to deal free damage. Don't waste it healing. Heal before the stagger, attack during it.
Advanced Strategies
Infinite Dash
The dash has a 0.5-second cooldown. If you chain dash-slash-dash-slash, you can cross entire rooms without touching the ground. The timing is tight — press dash, wait a beat, press slash, press dash immediately after. Practice in the first level's open areas.
Guard Break Combo
Heavy attack stuns shielded enemies for 2 seconds. During the stun, land 3 light slashes, then immediately heavy attack again. This keeps them in an infinite stunlock. Works on all humanoid enemies except bosses.
Parry Cancel
You can cancel a parry into a dash. If you mistime a parry (the enemy attack misses because you were too early), dash-cancel to avoid the recovery animation. The window is about 4 frames — very tight, but essential for speedrunning.
Corner Trapping
Enemies can't pass through you. Back into a corner and enemies will cluster in front of you. Use the heavy attack's wide arc to hit all of them at once. This trivializes group fights but leaves you vulnerable to ranged attacks — watch for turrets and bombers.

Final Tip
Heavy attack is your best friend. Most new players use light attack exclusively because it's faster. But heavy attack breaks guards, staggers big enemies, and deals double damage. One heavy hit is worth three light hits. Use it as your opener, then follow up with lights.
Verdict: A solid free action platformer with responsive sword combat and a compelling sci-fi story. If you want something you can finish in a weekend without spending a dime, this is it.
