Echo Vein — Complete Guide

What Is Echo Vein?

Echo Vein is a free 2D roguelike mining extraction game by King Peng Studio. You descend procedural caves, mine destructible terrain for resources, fight Hollowborn enemies, defeat sector bosses, and extract before the timer runs out. Choose between three distinct operators — Bulwark, Pathfinder, or Borecaster — each with their own weapon, ability, and upgrade path.

The game is built on HTML5 Canvas 2D with Web Audio, playable in browser or downloaded for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It launched in 2026 and is under active development with a published roadmap. The developer drew inspiration from Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, and it shows in the top-down mining and extraction loop.

How to Play

Each run follows a cycle: descend into a procedurally generated cave, mine resources from breakable terrain, fight waves of Hollowborn enemies, complete mission objectives, defeat the sector boss, then extract before time expires.

Resources you mine include Gild Shards (currency), Voltarite (upgrade material), Echo Shards (rare), and various ores. Mining generates heat on your tool — let it overheat and you're briefly vulnerable. Manage heat by pausing or switching to combat.

Missions vary between Hunt (kill X enemies), Survey (reach a certain depth), Harvest (collect X resources), and Holdout (survive waves). Complete missions for bonus rewards. Each mission type changes your goal and reward multiplier, so choose missions that suit your operator and current build.

Between runs, spend Gild Shards on permanent upgrades at the hub. Milestones track your progress across runs and unlock bonuses. Eight synergies provide cross-operator bonuses when you meet specific conditions.

The game scales difficulty through Hollow Pressure — as you descend and progress, tougher enemies spawn and existing ones gain new behaviors. Deeper sectors introduce tougher variants with new attack patterns.

Full gamepad support is available (a hotfix added large-monitor and controller deadzone adjustments). If you play in-browser on a large monitor, a Windows download is recommended because browser menus can behave oddly on very wide screens.

Operators

Bulwark — The armored DPS operator. Wields a Rotary Mauler for sustained close-range damage. Best for players who want to tank hits and shred enemies up close. Has higher base armor and health.

Pathfinder — The mobility operator. Uses a Vector Carbine for mid-range combat and can place traps (proximity mines, slow fields). Best for players who want tactical positioning and area control. Faster dash and deployable traps are its specialty.

Borecaster — The mining specialist. Carries a Thermal Lance that excels at both mining and combat. Has better heat capacity and mining speed, letting you mine longer before overheating. Best for players who prioritize resource collection.

Each operator has an XP track with level cap of 20. At level 20 you can Prestige, which resets the track but grants a stacking permanent bonus (HP, damage, speed, mining speed, or heat capacity) for future runs. Prestiging is how long-term power accumulates across runs.

Enemies: The Hollowborn

The Hollowborn are the corrupted creatures inhabiting the caves. Over 20 enemy types exist across different biomes, with behaviors ranging from charging beetles to teleporting void mites. Common types include:

  • Skitters — Fast, fragile melee units that swarm in groups
  • Shriekers — Ranged enemies that fire projectiles from a distance
  • Brutes — Slow, heavily armored melee enemies with high damage
  • Leeches — Small enemies that stick to you and drain health over time
  • Charging beetles — Rush straight at you in a line; dodge sideways
  • Void Mites — Teleport around the cave to flank you

Enemy behavior changes based on the biome and sector depth. Deeper sectors introduce tougher variants with new attack patterns, and Hollow Pressure escalates encounters as you progress.

Boss Fights

Each sector ends with a boss. The confirmed bosses are:

  • Hollow Tyrant — A massive armored brute that charges and slams. Dodge sideways, attack during its recovery frames.
  • Hex Shard Colossus — A crystalline entity that fires shard volleys. Use terrain for cover and attack the glowing weak points.
  • Molten Maw — A heat-based boss that leaves lava pools. Keep moving and manage your position carefully.

Bosses have phase transitions and weak points. Learn each boss's tell — the wind-up before a charge, the glow before a volley — to find the safe windows to deal damage.

Upgrades and Progression

Permanent upgrades purchased with Gild Shards include:

  • Health boost
  • Damage increase
  • Mining speed
  • Heat capacity
  • Extraction time extension
  • Starting equipment upgrades

30+ milestones track cumulative achievements (total resources mined, enemies killed, bosses defeated, extractions completed). Each milestone tier unlocks a reward.

Eight synergies activate when you meet conditions across operators — for example, "Mine 10,000 total ore across all operators" unlocks a global mining speed bonus. Every run also saves to a Run History of your last 20 runs, tracking kills, extraction speed, resources, operator level, and depth so you can compare performance.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn each operator's ideal mission. Bulwark shines in Holdout and Hunt missions where sustained close-range damage matters. Pathfinder's traps make it the best choice for Harvest and Survey missions, where controlling space protects you while you mine. Borecaster's mining speed and heat capacity make it the strongest pick for resource-heavy Harvest runs.
  • Cool your tool before fights. Enter combat with a cool mining tool so you can immediately switch back to mining after clearing an enemy pack. Mining at high heat leaves you unable to defend yourself during an ambush.
  • Extract with a full bank, not a desperate one. Extraction time is a purchasable upgrade for good reason. Don't wait until the last second — leave a window to bank your resources, because dying before extraction loses everything.
  • Chase synergies early. The eight cross-operator synergies (like mining 10,000 total ore across all operators) reward consistent play across multiple runs. Plan your operator picks to feed the synergies you want to unlock.
  • Use Hollow Pressure to read the difficulty. As Hollow Pressure rises, enemies spawn tougher variants. If you feel the pressure climbing faster than your build scales, prioritize spending Gild Shards on heat capacity and damage before descending further.
  • Study boss tells before attempting. Each boss has a clear wind-up before its dangerous move. Learn to read the Hollow Tyrant's shoulder dip before the charge and the Hex Shard Colossus's glow before a volley so you know exactly when to punish.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Ignoring heat managementOverheated tool leaves you unable to mine or defend yourself brieflyPause mining at 80% heat; let it cool while kiting enemies
Skipping side tunnelsMain path has fewer resources; you miss upgrade opportunitiesBranch out at least 2-3 rooms from the main path before descending
Holding too many resourcesDying before extraction loses everythingExtract early if you're low on health or the timer is tight
