Tidespawn — Deep Strategy Guide

Overview

Tidespawn is a pixel art action-adventure RPG set in a vast underwater world. Developed by indie studio Long Lost, it casts you as a diver exploring sunken ruins, battling fearsome sea creatures, and piecing together fragmented memories beneath the ocean.

The game blends real-time combat with exploration across hand-drawn pixel art biomes. What sets it apart is the memory system — instead of a linear story, you uncover the protagonist's past through environmental storytelling, collectible memory fragments, and choices that reshape how the story unfolds.

Tidespawn supports local co-op and split-screen multiplayer for up to 2 players. It's currently unreleased with a Steam page live for wishlisting.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

Underwater Combat

Combat is real-time with a focus on positioning and timing. You have a basic attack (melee weapon), a dodge roll with invincibility frames, and special abilities unlocked through progression.

Combat basics:

  • Light attack: quick, low damage, chains into 3-hit combo
  • Heavy attack: slow, high damage, breaks enemy guard
  • Dodge roll: 6 invincibility frames, short cooldown
  • Special abilities: mapped to Q/E/R, unlocked via exploration

Enemy types range from small aggressive fish swarms to massive leviathan bosses. Each has attack patterns you need to learn — the dodge timing changes per enemy.

Exploration and the Oxygen System

You cannot stay underwater indefinitely. An oxygen meter depletes over time and refills at air pockets (bubbles, surface areas, certain plants).

Oxygen mechanics:

  • Base oxygen: 120 seconds
  • Upgradeable through collectible shells
  • Air pockets restore 30 seconds per refill
  • Running out of oxygen starts a 10-second countdown — find air or die

Exploration rewards thoroughness. Hidden caves contain upgrade materials, memory fragments, and optional boss arenas. The map is interconnected — shortcuts unlock as you progress, similar to Metroidvania design.

Memory System

The story unfolds through memory fragments scattered across the ocean. Each fragment reveals a piece of the protagonist's past — who they were before diving, why they're searching the deep, and what they're running from.

Memory mechanics:

  • 40+ memory fragments total
  • Fragments are ranked: Faded (common), Clear (uncommon), Vivid (rare)
  • Vivid fragments unlock full cinematic flashback sequences
  • Collecting fragments in sets reveals hidden lore connections

The game has multiple endings based on how many memories you collect and the choices you make during key story moments.

Biomes and Locations

Each biome has a boss guardian. Defeating the boss unlocks a permanent ability upgrade (double jump, dash attack, oxygen boost) and opens the path to the next zone.

Upgrade Systems

Shell Currency

Collect shells from enemies, chests, and breakable objects. Shells are used at merchant NPCs (found in safe rooms) to buy:

  • Health potions (refill 50% HP)
  • Oxygen capsules (temporary 60s oxygen boost)
  • Weapon upgrades (damage + scaling)
  • Map fragments (reveals hidden areas)

Ability Unlocks

Abilities are tied to exploration milestones:

  1. Dash Strike — Found in Sunken Shallows. Dash forward dealing damage.
  2. Sonar Pulse — Kelp Cathedral. Reveals hidden objects on the map.
  3. Shield Bubble — Abyssal Trench. Temporary invulnerability.
  4. Tidal Wave — Crystal Caverns. AoE damage and knockback.
  5. Memory Echo — Ruined City. Highlights memory fragment locations.

Co-op Mode

Tidespawn supports local split-screen co-op for 2 players. Both players share the same oxygen economy but have separate health bars.

Co-op specifics:

  • Both players must be in the same biome
  • If one player dies, they respawn at the last checkpoint with 50% HP
  • Shared progress — item pickups and memory fragments count for both
  • Some puzzles require both players to stand on pressure plates
  • Boss HP scales by 60% per additional player

Beginner's Guide

Getting Started

First Hour

You start in the Sunken Shallows with basic gear and 120 seconds of oxygen. The first objective is to find three memory fragments that teach you the movement and combat basics.

Tips and Tricks

Key Early Tips

  • Follow the bubbles. Air pockets are marked by rising bubble streams. Memorize their locations.
  • Break everything. Coral clusters, crates, and plants drop shells and occasionally upgrade materials.
  • Talk to merchants. The first merchant sells an oxygen capacity upgrade for 50 shells — buy it immediately.
  • Don't fight everything. Some enemies are skippable. Running saves oxygen and health.

Oxygen Management

Oxygen is the real enemy in Tidespawn. Running out mid-exploration means backtracking from the last checkpoint.

  • Plan routes around air pocket locations
  • Upgrade oxygen capacity before exploring deep biomes
  • Keep emergency oxygen capsules for boss fights
  • The Sonar Pulse ability also marks the nearest air pocket

Combat Tips

  • Dodge toward enemies, not away. The invincibility frames let you phase through attacks.
  • Learn enemy tells. Every attack has a 0.5-1 second windup animation.
  • Use heavy attacks to break guard. Guarded enemies take 90% less damage.
  • Chain light attacks for sustained damage. Heavy attacks leave you vulnerable.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Hoarding shells. Spend them on oxygen upgrades first. Shells are plentiful.
  • Ignoring side paths. The main path is marked, but every offshoot contains something useful.
  • Skipping memory fragments. Ending quality depends on collection rate. Collect everything.
  • Playing aggressive. The game rewards patient, observant play over rushing.
